The clinical care pathway
Your learning goalDistinguish an educational achievement from the permissions and clinical arrangements needed to treat.
Build the care pathway
Begin with the person seeking treatment, the treating clinician and the clinician responsible for assessment and prescribing. Identify who can authorize care, who will administer it, who is available for questions, and who will manage follow-up. A shared medical director does not remove the need for a patient-specific assessment and a clear chain of responsibility.
Use documents deliberately
Before the clinical day, locate the current protocol, applicable product label, assessment record, consent, emergency contacts and documentation system. Check revision dates and signatures. A template bearing another practice or physician name needs reconciliation; it is not evidence of an active appointment.
Know what completion records
This written course records theoretical learning. Live faculty separately observe communication, preparation and clinical performance. A course completion certificate records those defined achievements; professional scope, prescribing authority and facility requirements come from the applicable governing bodies.
- Identify the authorized prescriber and supervising clinician.
- Use current, approved documents for the actual practice.
- Keep online and observed clinical completion separate.
Put the reasoning to work.
A learner passes the online exam and is asked to treat a model before an instructor has reviewed eligibility or the clinical plan.
What must happen before participation?Pause and write your response in the workbook, then compare your reasoning.
Read the case discussion
Pause clinical participation. Confirm eligibility, assessment, consent, the authorized plan and instructor readiness. An online score alone does not establish clinical competence.
